Based on these findings Watt6 was assumed to represent an authentic and new gene from Drosophila. Watt6 shows no homology to any hitherto identified gene other than in the coding region. ![]() The gene is positioned 3' of the gene encoding the histone H3.2 variant hH3.2, and is transcribed in the same direction. The sequence of Watt6 differs from that of the H1 subtypes by 6 amino acid substitutions. This subfamily contains three human and one mouse genes. We describe the isolation of a novel heat-stable histone H1 subtype from Drosophila melanogaster and assign it to the SerpH subfamily of the H1 histone family based on sequence comparison and immunological cross-reaction.
